Welcome to Ask an Addict

AskanAddict.com is intended to provide addiction support and advice in a non-judgmental way so that the addict or anyone else that's been affected by an addict will know there are many who understand and eliminate the feeling of being alone. Ask an Addict knows it may be hard to talk with family and friends as many times they just don’t understand. Many have fractured those important relationships in life during active addiction. When it comes to seeking information, likeness, and establishing a strong recovery program who better to ask then someone who has been there! At Ask an Addict we listen and learn, together. Whether your an addict, a recovering addict or have been affected by an addict, we all have that common denominator of addiction.

If I had to use one word to describe our members, it would be the word compassion. (sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it)

Jail or Rehab? How did we get here?
Our 23 yr old daughter is on probation for possession with the intent to sell. She just finished a year for a DUI, she has had periods where she has done really well with either AA or counseling. She is supposedly going to counseling now, but who knows. We recently found out she is using cocaine again and are trying to decide whether to call her PO and let her go to jail or tell her she has the option of rehab. After years of guilt and excuses, we realize we have been a crutch. How do you decide which is better? We want her to get better, but her past has showed us she can do anything and play any game for as long as she needs to. My husband believes she need to take responsibility and go to jail. This probably sounds very cold, but it is with a broken heart and devastated spirit that I write this. I could really use some advice on where to start. Broken Mom

A letter..They are human. They were Kids..
http://www.commonsnews.org/site/site05/story.php?articleno=11929&page=1#.VlHI9l88LCT Great article, an excerpt: They are human. They were kids. Before my friends were junkies, they were your kid's best friend, left wing on the soccer team, homecoming queen. By the time most people can admit they have a problem, they are already in handcuffs. There needs to be a change in the way people look at and treat addicts. MOLLY OSOWSKI, age 20, originally wrote this piece as a letter to the DA and the judge for her ex-boyfriend’s case. Originally published in The Commons issue #299 (Wednesday, April 1, 2015). This story appeared on page D1. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY to be able to keep a safe enough distance from heroin, but many people I grew up with were not so fortunate. Most of my friends got hooked on dope when they were 15, 16, and 17 years old.
