Happy Thanksgiving!!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here..those struggling with addiction, those affected by addiction, those mourning and those encouraged. I am thankful for this group..you have all helped me immeasurably over the last devastating years. We still have a long way to go but our story is proof that where there is life, there is hope. That even long-ingrained hurts and habits can be changed. That you never stop moving forward and when you do..your addict may just have to be swept along. Don't focus on what's going wrong..only focus on what is going right no matter how hard that may be to find some days. My Thanksgiving conversation with AD was all positive ..he has immersed himself in recovery and making a difference in the recovering community. He is gainfully employed at a job with a future that he is excited about. After 10 years of true hell, 4 of them mostly on the streets, this didn't seem possible. Peace and light to all those here who seek help and answers. They are out there.

Jail or Rehab? How did we get here?
Our 23 yr old daughter is on probation for possession with the intent to sell. She just finished a year for a DUI, she has had periods where she has done really well with either AA or counseling. She is supposedly going to counseling now, but who knows. We recently found out she is using cocaine again and are trying to decide whether to call her PO and let her go to jail or tell her she has the option of rehab. After years of guilt and excuses, we realize we have been a crutch. How do you decide which is better? We want her to get better, but her past has showed us she can do anything and play any game for as long as she needs to. My husband believes she need to take responsibility and go to jail. This probably sounds very cold, but it is with a broken heart and devastated spirit that I write this. I could really use some advice on where to start. Broken Mom

44 Days Clean & Sober
My son has now been 44 days clean & sober. This is breaking all previous records since before this, he always relapsed the day he got out. He is doing very well at the transitional home. He is very active in the community outreach for his chosen program, SMART Recovery. He is co-coordinator for the meetings and he is working on getting a new meeting started at the local Alano Club. He is attending at least one meeting a day and he alternates SMART with AA. He even goes to a meditation program at a Buddist temple on Saturdays with a friend. She is getting him interested in Yoga-Infused Recovery something I never thought I'd see. He seems to be (dare I say it), enjoying his life some and he is learning new pathways to handle stress, disappointment and boredom. He continues to see a psychiatrist once a week as well as group therapy & a caseworker. This program has been a godsend as it wasn't dump & run. Their follow-through is key as is the fact that he was finally (after 4 years on the streets) ready to accept the path offered. I am nervous as he started work on Friday. His lack of consistent work record puts him in restaurant work and alcohol is served there plus it is hard & stressful work. I hope he can stay the course with all the great recovery activities and this job or that through the community connections he's making while marketing SMART..he can get a different kind of job soon. He is training to be a peer counselor and he meets with county commissioners through his community outreach. He is very bright and articulate so maybe someone will have another plan for him employment-wise.

Rescued friend who steals meds
I have an old friend living with me because she was evicted and had no place to go. She can't work right now due to recent surgery and has almost no money. (OK, she has no money) She has lived with me for 6 months. During this time, I have discovered that she has stolen lots of meds from me and on more than one occasion. Obviously she has to go--I should have kicked her out long ago, but she will be homeless. I would appreciate any wise words and suggestions on handling this.

How does a wife escape when the husband won't
Today my husband and I decided that we no longer wanted to be our son's landlord and so would sell our so-called rental house. I thought we had a plan started until he said that he wanted to give the proceeds of the sale to give to our son over a ten year period. I lost it. I realize all my own limitations in releasing my adult son into the wild, but I would never give him say $200,000 to spend on whatever. Among the examples of his spending my husband included drugs. He thought we might be buying our son off basically. I'm afraid I utterly lost it -- I broke some dishes and screamed and told him he was trying to kill our son. I can't go on like this; I feel as though my feet are nailed to the floor.
