meth and claritin d

my boyfriend is an recovering meth addict and I just found out he has been taking around 10 claritin d 24hr pills with in a 12 hour period. What does this mean for his recovery and what physical signs do I need to pay attention to for his health and safety?

Similar chemical composition to Sudafed-the major component of meth! No bueno!

Welcome Newbie,

My son is a meth addict, and cook.

Aries is correct. Claritin d contains psuedoephedrine, the psuedoephedrine is the speed part of the meth, then caustic substances or used as additives.

Your bf has relapsed with the claritin d. He will be using meth again soon if he hasnt already.

In SC an individual is only allowed to purchase 90 pills of psuedoepedrine medication per month. The cashier swipes the black strip on the back of our drivers license and our information is automatically stored in a data base. The computer system will red flag any one even attempting to purchase more than the legal amount. The cops will show up eventually to the address listed on your drivers license.

What I am getting at is ........

Smurf: one who will go into Walmart, Riteaid etc and buy the claritin, sudafed, etc for meth cooks who have already met their monthly limit.

In my town a smurf gets paid $50 cash or a $50 bag of dope for a box of the medication.

So keep your eyes open.

They can fake fatigue and hunger but their dilated pupils tell on them every time. I see meth users wear sunglasses indoors and after dark to hide their pupils

Best wishes and I am glad you found us.

Take care of you!!!

It is not your job to manage his health and safety.  He has been through recovery and he knows what he is supposed to do to keep recovering.  Claritin D is NOT it.

I am glad you found us.  I hope you also have an Al-anon or Nar-anon support group for yourself.  If not, look up these two groups online and see where there are some meetings close to you.

Thank you all for your information, it was helpful. I know I can not manage his recovery but I need all the facts so I can make the best decision for me, e.g. if he is back in his addiction I have to decide if I am willing to live with it. I also need to be aware if his use is putting him in imminent danger so I can be prepared to call an ambulance.

Yes he is in imminent danger. Yes he is in a relapse. Yes you need to decide if your want to stick with him. He is back on the road to hell and you are right there with him.

No lengthy preparation needed to call an ambulance. Dial 911. Also leads to the police.

My x(who i miss) i think is a user but he denies...i also just found claritin in a weird place near where he was the last time he was here and blew up...I think i walked in on him and he threw it in my large utensil drawer. I thought he was using becuz he kept blowing up and then having nightmares and becoming more violent (he suffered terrible abuse) and i was trying to get him help. But when he tried to get me to snort a white substance on my bd and i sd no then confronted him abt meth he sd i was stupid cuz it was more the color of coke...? I did brush it into the garbage. There are so many other things. I broke up with him but hv been in contact and just today was wanting to see him. It has been a month. Then low and behold I found the claritin with two pills missing. I shd just follow my gut. I would have married him...i work in a field where i can not risk being associated with a drug uzer dealer or whatever. I am so bummed we had such a connection and then he just started throwing and hitting things and hallucinating and having nightmares...and showing signs of paranoia...well thanks for the info here. I appreciate it. Oh and he denies it.
