Moving forward after a felony
My AD is in recovery and attending college for the treatment of substance abuse. One of the requirements is for her to do an internship. As she is a convicted felon, she is having a hard time finding an establishment who will accept her, and will not be able to graduate without the internship. She getting discouraged. My question: is it up to the college to accommodate her (e.g., in lieu of the internship, offer her another alternative). Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to facilities she may seek an internship.
Thank you.

In Response to: Moving forward after a felony Most treatment centers hire people who have experienced the ups and downs of an active addictive life, including jail time, homeless shelters, etc. Encourage her that something will turn up, but don't do the work for her. She needs to experience the feeling of accomplishment, or disappointment if that's how it turns out. We need to let our loved ones experience life just like everyone else. In Response to: Moving forward after a felony I don't know what state you are in, but I am currently in a CDAC class in NJ, part of our requirement is 3000 hours of externship. My College supplies us with resume services and externship help. 95 % of my class are recovering addict, with past drug charges. I don't see a problem, most people who seek this certification do so for a reason, the have been touched by addiction. Her history is absolutely not a roadblock to this profession. She needs to sell himself , she brings a lot to the profession . Posted: 03/01/2015 4:00 AM Received 2 Thanks for this Post |

In Response to: Moving forward after a felony Agree with Marty. Here in SoCal, there are many recovering Addicts, & many Community Colleges that offer this specialized training. Education is wonderful. But what an invaluable dimension an Addict who has "been there" can offer! Posted: 03/01/2015 4:28 PM Received 1 Thanks for this Post |

In Response to: Moving forward after a felony A mental health facility. Most addiction counselors there are ex addicts and alot of people that work there have records of convictions. That is a great place to start! Even state run facilities
