I come from parents that both died from the effects of alcoholism...I can remember saying "I will never be like them." I grew up having a lot of anger and I had periods of depression that tormented me...I knew I was different, and that the beautiful home I grew up in was not normal...
I left home in my late teens and experienced my first drink sometime around the age of eighteen...I knew then that I liked the feeling of just not caring...I liked the feeling of not hurting...I so liked the numbing effects. I got married and had two children..I was beginning to be a good functional alcoholic...
This all changed ten years after...I believe my working career saved me from the decent into alcoholism...I started to attend meetings, AA, and I realized that I was indeed an alcoholic...I realized that my parents did the best they could with the disease they suffered from...So, I started on my journey into recovery..
About eight years ago I had major surgery and started on a course of pain medication...I became addicted to them real quick! I had to go to detox...
I must tell all of you that if you are an addict and you get clean, meaningful sobriety is the way to go...I have been there and it is well worth the work to remain clean, to not self destruct, because this is where active addiction will take you.... ...
One of the most important things you can do is seek support from people that care and will encourage you on your journey of recovery...My experience here has been nothing short of a miracle...I am very grateful for this site...
If you are searching, stop here, ask questions, make friends, learn about recovery, and start your journey of recovery....You never have to be alone again in your addiction...

Thank You Missymae2 for your thoughts on this. I am sorry to hear about your brother. I have been in recovery for almost 3 years and oxy's were my drug of choice too. Thats why it is so hard to see my stepson go down the tubes. His dad and I have been in therapy to learn how not to enable him. He flat out refuses treatment so our next step is to let his pain clinic know. I hope you had a great weekend it was pretty cloudy and raining at my neck of the woods. Posted: 06/26/2011 9:47 PM |

Missymae, You have been a constant reminder to everyone on this site what it takes to remain sober. You have been through so much since becoming a member and you have held steadfast with your sobriety. Even with all that you've been through, you continue to come here almost daily to help others with their addictions. Because you have been such a huge help to so many on this site, you now have the title "Sober Coach" under your profile name. This is given out to members of the site who have shown a consistent determination on not only their sobriety, but also in helping others here. Thanks for all you do, you truly are an inspiration to so many. Matt Posted: 10/26/2010 9:01 AM |
