Is Methadone An Excuse To Get High?
I apologize for my cynicism but I have truly been through hell with this man. I am at my wits end but am hoping and praying still so there is at least a flicker of light left. My bf is an alcoholic, smokes crack,does basically anything anyone lies down before him. He overdosed and died on Fentanyl and was resuscitated. Was put in a program for the billionth time. Now is on Methadone. So my question is basically, does Methadone really HELP them or does it hurt them? Because I have heard so many bad things about it and how addictive it is. But if it works for him and he can function better than he was and he stays off of the alcohol and other drugs then it will be amazing. But I have heard so many people doing drugs and alcohol while doing methadone too and that completely defeats the purpose. Thank you for your time, and again, sorry if I sound offensive. I am not trying to but this man drives me up tbe wall sometimes lol. Sometimes I think the only solution may be to chain him in the basement with no phone or any type of computer or communication device and leave him there until he doesn't crave it anymore.But he would find a way to message people. He would catch the house pn fire and send smoke signals to those connections or SOMETHING lol.

It is a mental illness (yes, addicts don't like that label; I am one of them) But for us , addictive substances cause changes in our brain chemistry that make us do crazy ****, like picking up a little blue pill I found in a bathroom, crushing it and adding it to my spoon. I am thinking, that must have been a birth control pill, but which sane person would do such a thing. So, you have concerns about methadone. If it keeps him off heroin and other opiate, it is doing its job. It supresses the high real opiates produce and it can help in kicking the habit. Your friend already survived "the big one" Fentanyl. He should consider himself lucky. Does he receive regular counciling? I firmly believe that the only sure-fire way to get rid of opiate addiction is to go cold turkey. I did.in 1973. Those first three days were so horrible that I cannot imagine going there again. And yes, I am old now and still have cravings everyday, but I can easily resist them now. In Response to: Is Methadone An Excuse To Get High? Methadone is a assist for getting off of and staying off of Opiates. It is a replacement drug, administered under tight supervision and watched closely by medical professions. For some, it is the only way to sobriety. For others is it one of many ways to keep using. One can be on methadone and use coke etc. So, my call? it is a start, and part of a road to recovery.

Courtesy of our tax payers most people on methadone are able to receive it free of charge, are provided transportation and even child care just to allow them to legally receive this substance. I imagine there are some success stories but I haven’t yet encountered any true recoveries. My father was in Vietnam and came home with basically a lifetime prescription. To make a very long story somewhat short because of his “loyalty” to the clinic he occasionally was able to bring home weeks and sometimes months of doses. Prior to his death he was hospitalized and had a 10 day supply. He was diagnosed with pneumonia which caused his death. He was told in his early 30s he shouldn’t expect to any longer than 50 due to the damage methadone causes to all your vital organs. During my dads time at the hospital my 23 year oldbrother a recovering heroin addict found the methadone mixed it with lowest dosage of Xanax (0.25) and passed away 23 days after my father due to “accidental overdose”. I apologize to anyone I may offend. I have spent twenty plus years lobbying against methadone. The only fact I know for sure is that methadone maintenance is a constant money maker in the United States. My last meeting I attended with physicians, attorneys, social workers, local government, etc i had to walk out. I explained to them all my feelings and if I didn’t care about human life. I learned one thing and that was in order to be guaranteed an substantial government salary I would open a clinic myself. All jaws dropped and not one person had an argument against my statement.
