vivitrol

Has anyone taken the vivitrol shot? what was your experience? Positive/negative? My son also takes other prescribed drugs such as quetiapine fumorate, zoloft hcl, gabapentin, and trazodone. Seems like too much medicine to me and add to all that the vivitrol shot??? He has just gotten out of inpatient treatment and has moved into a sober living home.

My son takes the vivitrol shot. I am not sure about adding it to all the other meds. It is the only thing he is on. He took the shot for 7 months and did very well , even stayed clean for 14 months after stopping it. One slip and he was back to bad. He has now been on it for 5 months. It is not a cure but it does help curb thoughts and desires and he does meetings with it.

I'd agree with Anna. For an addict, it sounds like an extremely strong combination!

I believe vivitrol has been associated with liver damage, if he's living in a sober house and attending mandatory meetings, he doesn't need it. Working the steps works without using a drug replacement. That is an awful lot of drugs in his system.

These doctors push these drugs and in my opinion, it's the easy way, and the easy way does not work long term. My daughters dr one time told me and her she needed to go on methadone for life, that she was too far gone. He was wrong.

I knew someone who took this shot. It helped him a lot. He was coming off of heroin and I remember him telling me that he had to be off of Subutex ( i think that is correct medicine name.... Going off of memory) for 7-10 days before taking the shot. Some insurancea do not cover it. He spent quite a bit of $ to get the shot. Hope this helps you.

I've heard mostly positive reviews of vivitrol, but he isn't supposed to be on it forever. Make sure the doctors have a plan to get him off this drug in a certain time frame. Plans can be adjusted according to your son's needs, but it would be nice to know that they have plan at all.

Any treatment or program only works as well as the commitment of the person participating in the treatment/program.

I am a recovering alcoholic and every time I went through inpatient rehab or detox, I was prescribed anti-psychotics and SSRI's.  Taking those meds were my way of holding on to some sort of substance (even if they were far from my drug of choice).  They made me feel different, not truly sober.  The withdraw from the anti-psychotics (Seroquil, trazodone) is real, everything from anxiety to insomnia to emotional turmoil.  In some cases the withdraw would reinforce a false belief that the drugs were necessary.  I am a calm mannered person and once I was sober and off of the meds for a while my true self emerged, a self that didn't need those medications.  Why doctors think prescribing mood meds is a good idea before the patient is detoxed and sober is beyond me.  I agree with the other posts that you should seek another doctors opinion and try to get your son off of those medications.  As for vivitrol, he really needs to want to be sober and clean for himself, not because he has a medication that will prevent him from getting high.  Vivitrol only blocks opiates from having any effect chemically in the body. It does not prevent old behaviors or thoughts from resurfacing.  In effect, it may not keep him clean and sober. There are several avenues in recovery that can help change the old behaviors and thinking (AA, NA).  In my opinion those medications only hinder the recovery process.
