Waiting for next court date
Came back from 6 months in Fla rehab still using. My son went to court for stealing from my house and drug position in my house. He crossed boundaries we had set up after is winter in rehab. The judge told him to get a Kaydak evaluation for a court ordered long term rehab instead of jail time. He missed the first one the judge ordered because an enabling Aunt bailed him out of jail and he went back to a rehab in FLA? He is back in CT and he has 1 month before his next court he has to pass two DT a week get his kaydak evaluation and get into a IOP. He in in a sober house at this time and seems to be focused on staying clean and out of jail. My wife thinks he needs a lawyer not a public defender? I think that would just piss the judge off at this point and he may loose the chance at the Long term rehab order that the PD and the court psychologist is working to get him into. I feel we cant and shouldn't buy his troubles away, but I'm afraid what jail might turn him into

A lawyer will do everything he can to get your son out if trouble and keep him out of jail and possibly off completely. I don't think you should get him a lawyer, let him feel the consequenses with no help from mommy and daddy. That will do the opposite of help. If you want a chance for him save himself, let him be,don't get involved, let him make the decisions, good or bad.

What will Jail do to your son? What will the status quo do to your son?

If he ends up in jail,it will be because he earned it.

If he keeps being saved from the consequences of his drug use, he will die.

Public Defenders make a living at public expense to defend persons who cannot afford to pay for a private lawyer. they do know what they are doing, and you have already paid for it through taxes. Plus your son, who got himself into this mess, cannot afford to pay for an attorney.

My son had a public defender and the public defender was more aware of programs available to my son than the lawyer I paid a few years ago.  Below, I have sent you a link to a good article for your wife and other relatives who think they are "helping".  Hope it helps.

Our County (San Diego) has Drug Court: They are tested, get help with case management & housing & see the Same Judge once a month for a year. It seems like a more whole approach, rather than sort of piece- mealing it. Check with the county agency in your area like Superior Court or Health & Human Services. (My late Daughter once spent 90 days in county jail because she neglected to go to the court-ordered twice weekly Drug Diversion Class.) So, it IS very important. But of course it's the Addict's call. Peace & prayers.
