In Response to: How soon is death without treatment

I'm not sure that anyone could actually give an exact time frame on when death will come to an addict without recovery. Some addicts will go an extremely long time without ever getting into trouble, having financial or family issues, or death.... While others will find themselves struggling with their lives within a fairly short timeframe. The thing about being an addict (with any drug addiction) is that there truly is not certainties in an addicts life. One day you could be doing fine and think you have your addiction in control and all it takes is one newer stronger batch of drugs to cause an overdose, or one drink too many and a bad decision to drive that leaves your family mourning your death. Being an addict is a giant game of Russian roulette. From experience (recovering heroin addict) I have seen people use very large amounts and be fine and then all of a sudden that very same amount just happened to be stronger and they didn't survive. If you are worried about someone you love who won't seek treatment, or if you are an addict simply questioning when death will come without treatment, or neither one and you're just curious, I can only tell you one very simple thing. Addiction is extremely difficult to maneuver on your own and treatment isn't always what is truly desired by the addict. No amount of worrying will help. There's no telling when or even if the addiction will kill you or someone you love, but treatment is the way to prevent it from happening. Addicts just simply need to want it for themselves and sometimes the fear or quitting outweighs the fear of dying. Good luck to you!
