44 Days Clean & Sober
My son has now been 44 days clean & sober. This is breaking all previous records since before this, he always relapsed the day he got out. He is doing very well at the transitional home. He is very active in the community outreach for his chosen program, SMART Recovery. He is co-coordinator for the meetings and he is working on getting a new meeting started at the local Alano Club. He is attending at least one meeting a day and he alternates SMART with AA. He even goes to a meditation program at a Buddist temple on Saturdays with a friend. She is getting him interested in Yoga-Infused Recovery something I never thought I'd see. He seems to be (dare I say it), enjoying his life some and he is learning new pathways to handle stress, disappointment and boredom. He continues to see a psychiatrist once a week as well as group therapy & a caseworker. This program has been a godsend as it wasn't dump & run. Their follow-through is key as is the fact that he was finally (after 4 years on the streets) ready to accept the path offered. I am nervous as he started work on Friday. His lack of consistent work record puts him in restaurant work and alcohol is served there plus it is hard & stressful work. I hope he can stay the course with all the great recovery activities and this job or that through the community connections he's making while marketing SMART..he can get a different kind of job soon. He is training to be a peer counselor and he meets with county commissioners through his community outreach. He is very bright and articulate so maybe someone will have another plan for him employment-wise.

Thankfully, he was just offered a job today as an assistant manager in an organic market (I saw the email!). He is also going for a second interview in a medical practice for medical billing (He has a background in economics). So we are grateful the restaurant gig (which necessitated him serving drinks) is over. I have to say, real recovery is pretty exciting. We pray for this to continue..

Thanks Anna! You are so right. The successes build on each other. Things moving in a very positive direction. He has two job offers now and as he said "A very good problem to have!"
