I am what some would refer to as a functioning addict. I started smoking pot and drinking at 12 years old and haven't spent many days sober since. I am now 35. I have always somehow managed to excel and rise to management, within a year after starting a new job, (if I was not hired as management right away), I am not proud of this or bragging but I am a master at keepig everyone fooled, my drug use has never been even suspected, by an employer and I have left every job on excellent terms and recieved glowing refrences from every job that I have ever left. The only reason I have ever left a job was to relocate. I have been in the same industry for 18 years now. From the age of 12 until the age of 19 I smoked pot daily. From the age of 18 until the age of 23 I drank to blakout state almost daily. From the age of 19 to 22 I used cocaine almost daily and managed to kick the addiction. At 23 I stopped drinking but became addicted to oxycontin until the age of 25 when I went on methadone to overcome that addiction. I was on methadone until I was 31 when I sucessfully came off of methadone and completed the treatment but at 32 developed a cocaine addiction once more and managed to overcome it but developed an addiction to crystal meth and speed in the process and that is the addiction that I am currently battling to date.
I am sharing this because I want people to be aware, that drug addicts are not necessarily your sterotypical corner street junkie, often they are your employer, doctor, lawyer, teacher ect. more often than you would even begin to know, they are the last person that you would ever suspect.
I plan to overcome everything one day and I have studied and studied addiction over the years. I have all the tools to be able to do it but sadly I can't seem to find the will just yet.
